Specialist Moss Removal using Steam at Low Pressure

Back to projects overview page.

It is a known fact that moss spores cause severe damage to your roof. The spores eat away at the tiles, causing damage that could cost thousands of pounds to have rectified. Most companies use a high pressure cold wash on roofs. Whilst this does leave the roof looking clean, in many cases it will damage the roof.

Wild Blessings are one of the few companies across the UK that use a hot steam wash on roofs. This safely removes algae, lichen, black fungus and moss. The steam temperature is approximately 120° above boiling and at low pressure, this causes no damage to the roofs. It not only cleans the roof tiles, but also kills all the micro-spores of the moss, lichen etc. Cold water jet washing leaves these micro-spores behind, but they are not visible to the naked eye.

Once the roof has been steamed and cleaned, we apply a biocide known as a bio-wash, which stops and prevents moss, lichen and algae regrowth. We use the best bio-wash product on the market, called Bakiclean CR.  This lasts for approximately 12 months and so we suggest a bio-wash every 12 months to provide continued protection against micro-spore, lichen and algae regrowth.

We can also apply a biocide bio-wash to thatched rooms to kill off the moss. Moss on thatched roofs will cause major damage to the thatch if it is left for a long period of time. The moss, especially when wet, will start to rot the thatch away, so a bio wash is highly recommended even on a newly or recently thatched roofs. This will prevent any growth visible to the naked eye for up to 12 months.

We have a very high standard of health and safety at all times. Houses will need to be scaffolded for which we use a local company. For bungalows, we have our own scaffold tower, which we supply to each job. If access to the roof requires it, we will use a cherry picker.
